THE ENDLESS LIST OF DESIGN DECISIONS: BEHIND THE SCENES OF A PERFECT ENSUITE

A few weeks ago, we shared an Instagram reel titled "All the Decisions Made in This Photo" (check it out here). In the reel, we highlighted about 20 design decisions that went into completing an ensuite. This got me thinking about how the list of design choices is practically endless! As designers, we consider every little detail to bring a space together seamlessly.

When we embark on a renovation project, especially one as intimate as an ensuite, it's not just about picking a few tiles and paint colors. It's about creating a harmonious environment where every element plays a part in the overall aesthetic and functionality. Here are some of the key decisions we make that often go unnoticed but have a significant impact on the final result:

1. Layout and Flow

  • Space Planning: We start with the basic layout, ensuring that the flow of the room is practical and efficient. This includes the placement of the shower, vanity, toilet, and storage.

  • Accessibility: Making sure everything is within easy reach and that the space is comfortable to navigate.

2. Material Selection

  • Tiles & Flooring: Choosing the right tiles for the floor and walls, considering factors like durability, slip resistance, and aesthetic appeal.

  • Countertops & Cabinets: Selecting materials that are not only beautiful but also resistant to moisture and easy to maintain.

3. Color Palette

  • Wall Colors: Deciding on the perfect shade for the walls that complements the tiles and fixtures.

  • Accents & Finishes: Incorporating accent colors through accessories and fixtures to add depth and interest.

4. Lighting

  • Natural Light: Maximizing natural light with well-placed windows or skylights.

  • Artificial Lighting: Layering lighting with a mix of task, ambient, and accent lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

5. Fixtures and Hardware

  • Faucets & Showerheads: Choosing fixtures that match the overall style, whether it’s modern, traditional, or somewhere in between.

  • Hardware: Selecting handles, knobs, and pulls that complement the cabinetry and add a touch of elegance.

6. Storage Solutions

  • Built-in Storage: Designing custom cabinetry that fits the space perfectly and offers ample storage.

  • Shelving & Niches: Adding niches in the shower or shelves above the toilet for extra storage without cluttering the space.

7. Personal Touches

  • Decor & Accessories: Incorporating personal touches like artwork, plants, and decorative items that reflect the homeowner’s style.

  • Textiles: Choosing the right towels, rugs, and shower curtains that tie the whole look together.

Every decision we make, from the type of grout to the style of mirror, contributes to the final result. It's a complex puzzle where every piece needs to fit just right. Our goal is to create a space that feels cohesive, comfortable, and uniquely yours.

Next time you step into a beautifully designed room, take a moment to appreciate the countless decisions behind it. And if you're planning a renovation, remember that we're here to help you navigate every choice, big or small, to create your dream space.
